Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do you have any "tips" or "pointers" to help make sure my application is taken under review?
Yes, we do. First, make sure to spend time on your essay. We will be reading it. Also, do what you can to highlight your volunteerism and community service. Both of these are things that Ashley loved, and we will be looking for someone who like her, loves these things too. Brag. Now is the time. We want to know where you have spent your extra time and what have you been doing for others. Volunteering and community service are what is going to set you apart from someone else. It is the FIRST thing that we are looking for. Keep those things in mind. Lastly, be yourself. That is the biggest "tip" we can give you. Don't over exaggerate what you did, but show us the best that you have. :)
2. The scholarship is based in Texas. If I do not live in Texas or plan to attend college in Texas, am I eligible?
Yes, the scholarship is available to any high school senior or college freshman, who is enrolled full-time, in a degree seeking program, ANYWHERE is the United States. :)
3. What does Outstanding Civic Involvement, Benevolent Character and Philanthropic Endeavors mean?
4. Is the scholarship open to all students regardless of legal residency status? (I am the son/daughter of a migrant farm worker, and we are still in the process of getting our United States Citizenship. Do I qualify?)
Yes, you qualify. If you are a high school senior or college freshman currently enrolled, or will be enrolled, in a 2 year or 4 year college or university, within the United States, then YES, you qualify, regardless of residency status.
5. I am confused about the essay. Does "One personal statement is required that exemplifies your civic involvement or community service. This reflection should present specific details of your roles and efforts and provide insight into both personal growth and future goals that have resulted from these experiences." mean that I need to write an essay or just a reflection?
This is your ESSAY. You have 500 words to reflect on your volunteer experience. Why you? What do you and Ashley have in common that sets you apart from others? What did you do in the past that will make the future of others better? This is your opportunity to tell us about it.
6. I have volunteer work that I did as part of a group in high school. Do I write that in the Extra-Curricular section or the Volunteer section?
Since this is merit based competition primarily focusing on philanthropy, or service within your community, our suggestion is that the more worthy entries that you can have in the Volunteer section, the better it will appear.
7. The essay says 500 words maximum. My essay is 150 words, is that sufficient?
Honestly, unless you are extremely articulate then, no, probably not. You have 500 words to give us insight into your life... use them.

3. What does Outstanding Civic Involvement, Benevolent Character and Philanthropic Endeavors mean?
- Outstanding civic involvement means: leadership opportunities, in both present and future, in your school and in your community. This can be at your high school, college, church, anywhere really, where you have demonstrated leadership either by being an officer in an organization, or being part of a group that created a change for the positive in your community. Have you been the leader of anything in your community? Did you chair a campaign? Tell us about it.
- Benevolent character, including integrity, resolution, self-discipline and judgment, means just that. Are you a good person? Do you do good things for others? If so, tell us about it. We want to hear what is good about you.
- Philanthropic endeavors, in both community and academic settings means simply-service. Where do you volunteer and how do you spend your time helping others. Have you done any significant volunteering or have you helped out on any big volunteer campaigns? If so, we want to hear about what you have done. Does a specific group tug at your heart strings? If so, what have you done to help them? Tell us, please. And not to be rude, but if you haven't done any volunteering, or your community service is limited, then simply put, this scholarship is not for you.
